Before-and-after posts are the most persuasive content a beauty business can share. They prove your skill instantly. But inconsistent lighting and angles can make even great work look average. Here’s how to shoot them well and honestly.
Consistency is everything
- Same light: shoot both photos in the same spot with the same lighting.
- Same angle: mark a spot on the floor and keep the camera at the same height.
- Same distance and framing.
- Same background: a plain wall or backdrop.
- No filters on one and not the other.
Set up a photo spot
Choose a wall near a window or set up a ring light or softbox. Use a neutral background. Keep a small tripod there so every photo is taken from the same position.
Angles to capture
- Hair: back, both sides, front and a movement shot.
- Lashes: eyes closed from above, eyes open straight on, side profile.
- Nails: top-down hand, slight angle, and a lifestyle shot.
- Brows and makeup: straight on and three-quarter.
- Skin: same lighting, no makeup in both, straight on and profile.
Layouts that work
- Side by side: classic split, labeled Before and After.
- Carousel: before on slide one, after on slide two, so people swipe.
- Reveal Reel: before shot, quick transition, after shot with movement.
- Process carousel: before, during, after, with short notes on technique.

Stay honest
- Don’t use editing to change the result.
- Don’t use AI to create or enhance transformations.
- Note when results need multiple sessions.
- For skin and med spa treatments, avoid exaggerated claims and follow advertising rules for your industry.
Get consent
Ask clients for written permission to post photos, and let them choose whether their face is shown. Some clients will be happy to be tagged; others prefer anonymous crops. Keep a simple consent form in your booking process.
