Content pillars are the recurring themes your account posts about. They make planning faster, keep your feed balanced and teach your audience what to expect from you. Here is how to choose yours.
Why pillars work
- Faster planning: you fill slots instead of inventing ideas.
- Balance: you avoid posting only promotions or only tips.
- Recognition: followers learn what you are about.
How to choose your pillars
- List your customers’ questions. What do they ask before, during and after buying?
- List what makes you different. Your process, values, people, location.
- List what you sell. Products, services, offers.
- Group everything into three to five themes.
- Assign a rough mix, for example 40 percent educate, 25 percent connect, 20 percent prove, 15 percent sell.
A universal starter set
- Educate: teach something useful.
- Connect: show the people and story behind the brand.
- Prove: share results and reviews.
- Sell: promote what you offer.

Turn pillars into posts
Combine each pillar with a format and an angle. “Educate” plus “carousel” plus “mistakes” is a post. “Connect” plus “Reel” plus “day in the life” is another. Map them on our content calendar template and pull ideas from 100 small business post ideas. The full system is in our Instagram content ideas guide.
