Parameters are the short commands you add to the end of a Midjourney prompt to control shape, style and randomness. Here are the ones that matter most for social media, explained simply. Midjourney updates often and some parameters behave differently between versions, so check the official documentation if a result surprises you.
Aspect ratio: –ar
Sets the shape of the image. Always set it for social media.
| Use | Parameter |
|---|---|
| Instagram feed | –ar 4:5 or –ar 3:4 |
| Stories, Reels, TikTok | –ar 9:16 |
| –ar 2:3 | |
| YouTube thumbnail, banners | –ar 16:9 |
| Square | –ar 1:1 |
Stylize: –s
Controls how strongly Midjourney applies its own artistic style. Low values follow your prompt more literally; high values look more artistic. For product and commercial images, try lower to moderate values. For mood and campaign art, try higher values.
Raw style: –style raw
Reduces Midjourney’s default beautification for a more literal, photographic look. Useful for realistic product and lifestyle images.
Chaos: –c
Controls how different the images in a grid are from each other. Higher chaos gives more varied results, which is useful when brainstorming concepts.
No: –no
Tells Midjourney what to leave out. Examples: –no text, –no people, –no logos. Great for clean backgrounds.
Seed: –seed
A number that controls the starting noise. Using the same seed with a similar prompt can produce more similar results, which helps when testing small changes.
Style reference: –sref
Uses an image (or a style code) as a style guide so new images match its look. This is the best tool for a consistent brand feed. Pair it with a style weight parameter to control how strongly it applies.
Subject consistency references
Midjourney has offered character and object reference features (the names have changed across versions) that help keep the same person, mascot or object across images. Check the current docs for the right parameter in your version.
Version: –v
Selects the model version. Newer versions usually follow prompts better. Results and supported parameters differ between versions.
Tile: –tile
Creates seamless repeating patterns, handy for backgrounds, packaging and story backdrops.
Weird: –weird
Adds unusual, unexpected qualities. Fun for attention-grabbing campaign art, rarely right for product shots.
