When someone visits your profile, your Reels covers are a big part of what they see. Random video frames make a feed look messy. Designed covers make it look intentional and help people find the videos they want. Here is how to make them in Canva.
Size and crop zones
Design covers at 1080 x 1920 pixels, the full Reel size. Your profile grid shows a cropped portion from the middle, so keep the title and key visual in the center area of the design. Test your cover by previewing how it crops on your profile before posting, since Instagram’s grid crop has changed over time.
Choose a cover system
Pick one approach and stick with it:
- Color-coded series: one background color per content type, for example tips in orange, tours in blue.
- Photo plus title: a still frame from the video with a bold title on a solid band.
- Numbered series: “Tip #12” style covers that encourage people to watch them all.
- Face plus title: your face with an expression and a short title, like a YouTube thumbnail.
Step by step in Canva
- Create a 1080 x 1920 design and add a centered guide box for the grid crop area.
- Add your background (color or photo).
- Add a title of three to six words in a bold font, large enough to read on a small thumbnail.
- Apply your brand colors from your Brand Kit.
- Duplicate the page for each new Reel and only change the title and image.
- Download as PNG and select “Add from camera roll” as the cover when posting your Reel.
