How to Make YouTube Thumbnails in Canva (That People Click)

A practical Canva tutorial for YouTube thumbnails: size, faces, text, contrast and the layouts creators use, plus how to test thumbnails without guessing.

How to Make YouTube Thumbnails in Canva (That People Click)

Your thumbnail and title decide whether someone watches your video. A great video with a weak thumbnail gets ignored. Here is how to make clickable YouTube thumbnails in Canva.

Size and basics

Create a design at 1280 x 720 pixels (16:9). YouTube shows thumbnails very small on phones and in suggested videos, so design for that smallest size. The bottom right corner is covered by the video length, so keep important elements out of it.

The four elements of a strong thumbnail

  1. A clear focal point: usually a face with a strong expression or the main subject of the video.
  2. Short text: three to five words that add to the title rather than repeat it.
  3. High contrast: bright subject on a dark background, or the reverse.
  4. Curiosity: a before and after, an arrow, a result, a question.

Step by step in Canva

  1. Start a 1280 x 720 design or open a thumbnail template.
  2. Add your background: a solid color, a gradient or a blurred photo.
  3. Add your photo and cut out the background (with the background remover or a photo shot against a plain wall).
  4. Add an outline or soft glow around the cutout to separate it from the background.
  5. Add three to five words in a heavy font, large enough to read at a glance.
  6. Add one accent element if needed: an arrow, a circle, an icon.
  7. Zoom out to about 25 percent to check readability.

Layouts that work

  • Face left, text right: the classic creator layout.
  • Before and after split: perfect for transformations and tutorials.
  • Big number: “$0 to $10K” or “7 mistakes”.
  • Object hero: a product or result large in the center with minimal text.

Thumbnail templates and prompts

Keep a recognizable style

Use the same fonts, colors and layout family on every thumbnail so subscribers recognize your videos in their feed. Build two or three master thumbnail designs and duplicate them.

Test, don’t guess

YouTube Studio shows click-through rate for each video. If a video has good retention but a low click-through rate, try a new thumbnail. YouTube has also been rolling out built-in thumbnail testing for some creators, which lets you compare options directly.
