Carousels are the most saved and shared format on Instagram because they teach something in bite-size slides. Here is how to build one in Canva, including the seamless swipe effect that makes people keep swiping.
Step 1: Set up the right size
Create a design at 1080 x 1350 pixels (portrait). Every slide in a carousel must be the same size, and portrait takes up the most space in the feed. Each slide will be a separate page in Canva.
Step 2: Plan your slides
Write the content before you design. A proven structure:
- Hook slide: a bold promise in under eight words, for example “7 pricing mistakes that cost you clients”.
- Context slide: why this matters.
- Value slides: one idea per slide.
- Summary slide: the key takeaway.
- Call to action: save, share, comment or follow.

Step 3: Design the first slide
Your hook slide is the only slide most people see, so make it count: big headline, high contrast, one visual cue that there is more to swipe (an arrow, a “swipe” label or a cut-off element at the edge).
Step 4: Build a consistent layout
Design slide two as your master layout: headline position, body text style, slide number, handle. Then duplicate it for every value slide. Consistent placement makes carousels easier to read.
Step 5: Create the seamless swipe effect
The seamless effect makes an image or shape look like it continues across slides.
- Place an element, for example a photo or a large shape, so it hangs off the right edge of slide one.
- Note its position in the Position panel (the X value).
- Copy the element and paste it onto slide two.
- Set its X position to the original value minus 1080. Because each slide is 1080 pixels wide, the element now lines up perfectly at the seam.
- Repeat for any element that crosses a seam.
Tip: lines, arrows and curved shapes that flow across slides are the easiest way to tie the whole carousel together.

Step 6: Export and upload
- Click Share, then Download, choose PNG and select all pages.
- Canva downloads a zip with one image per slide, in order.
- On Instagram, tap the multiple-selection icon and choose your slides in order.
Carousel design tips
- Keep body text to about 25 words per slide.
- Use the same font sizes on every slide.
- Add slide numbers (“2/7”) so people know how much is left.
- Repeat your brand color on every slide.
- End with a clear ask. “Save this for later” works well for tips.
