Pinterest works more like a visual search engine than a social network. People search for ideas, save pins and click through to websites, which makes it one of the best free traffic sources for blogs, shops and service businesses. The pin design is what earns the click. Here is how to make pins in Canva that perform.
Size
Use 1000 x 1500 pixels (a 2:3 ratio). Taller pins can get cut off in the feed, and square pins take up less space. Vertical video and idea pins use 1080 x 1920.
Anatomy of a high-performing pin
- A strong image that shows the result: the finished room, the plated dish, the styled outfit.
- A text overlay with a clear, keyword-rich title, for example “15 Easy Weeknight Pasta Recipes”.
- A supporting line such as “Ready in 20 minutes”.
- Your brand in small type or a logo at the bottom.
Layouts that work
- Photo top, text bottom: image takes the top two thirds with a solid text band below.
- Text band in the middle: two photos with a headline band between them.
- Full-bleed with overlay: one photo with a semi-transparent box behind the text.
- Collage: three or four small photos with a title, great for roundup posts.
- Infographic: a tall step-by-step or checklist design that people save.
Text overlay rules
- Use big, bold fonts that can be read on a small phone screen.
- Keep the title to about eight words.
- Use numbers when they are true, such as “10 ideas” or “5 steps”.
- Use high contrast between text and background.

Make many pins from one design
Pinterest favors fresh pins, meaning new images, even when they link to the same page. In Canva, create one design with five or six pages, each with a different photo, title wording or layout, all linking to the same blog post or product. That gives you a month of fresh pins from one piece of content.
Write pin titles and descriptions for search
Include the words people actually search, like “small kitchen organization ideas” rather than “my kitchen glow-up”. Add a short description that explains what they will find when they click. Our AI copy prompts can help you write variations quickly.
Pinterest tips for businesses
- Create boards named with search terms.
- Pin consistently rather than in big bursts.
- Link every pin to a relevant page, not just your homepage.
- Repurpose blog posts, product pages and lead magnets into pins.
Pins use the same design principles as every other format. Learn them in our Canva social media guide, and check our sizes cheat sheet for every platform.
