How to Design Social Media Posts in Canva: The Complete Guide

A complete guide to designing scroll-stopping social media posts in Canva: sizes, layouts, fonts, colors, brand kits, templates, carousels, stories and a workflow that takes hours, not days.

How to Design Social Media Posts in Canva: The Complete Guide

Canva made design accessible to everyone, which is great, and also why so many feeds look the same. The difference between posts that blend in and posts that stop the scroll is rarely talent. It is a handful of design decisions made on purpose. This guide walks through all of them, from your first blank canvas to a repeatable weekly workflow.

Start with the right size

Every platform crops differently, so begin with the correct dimensions instead of resizing later.

Format Size (pixels)
Instagram feed post (portrait) 1080 x 1350 (4:5), or 1080 x 1440 (3:4) to match the profile grid
Instagram / Facebook Story, Reels cover, TikTok 1080 x 1920
LinkedIn carousel (PDF) 1080 x 1350
Pinterest pin 1000 x 1500
YouTube thumbnail 1280 x 720

The five design rules that matter most

1. One message per post

A social post is seen for about a second before someone decides to stop. If your design tries to say three things, it says nothing. Pick one headline, one image, one action.

2. Hierarchy: big, medium, small

Make the most important words much bigger than everything else. A strong post usually has a large headline, a smaller supporting line, and tiny details like your handle. If everything is the same size, nothing stands out.

3. Contrast

Text must be readable on a phone in bright sunlight. Dark text on light backgrounds or light text on dark backgrounds, never mid-gray on a busy photo. If text sits on a photo, add a solid shape or a dark gradient behind it.

4. Space

Leave margins. Keep text at least 60 to 80 pixels from the edges so nothing gets cropped and the design can breathe.

5. Consistency

Use the same two fonts and the same small color palette across every post. Consistency is what makes a feed look like a brand. Avoid the most common traps with our list of 12 Canva design mistakes.

Fonts: pick two and stop

Choose one display font for headlines and one clean font for supporting text. Pairing a bold sans serif headline with a simple sans serif body is the safest, most modern choice. Our roundup of the best Canva fonts for social media includes tested pairings.

Colors: a palette, not a rainbow

Three to five colors is plenty: a background, a text color, one accent and maybe one or two supporting tones. Use the accent sparingly for the thing you want people to notice. If you need a starting point, try one of our 30 Canva color palettes.

Set up a Brand Kit

Canva’s Brand Kit stores your logo, colors and fonts so you can apply them in one click. It is the single biggest time saver for consistent posts (some Brand Kit features depend on your plan). Follow our step-by-step brand kit setup.

Start from a professional template

Templates: the shortcut that actually works

Designing every post from scratch is slow and inconsistent. Working from a template set gives you proven layouts, and you only change the photos, words and colors. The key is choosing templates with strong structure and then customizing them properly. Our guide on how to edit Canva templates without breaking the design shows exactly what to change and what to leave alone.

Formats and how to design each

Single image posts

Best for announcements, quotes, offers and photos. One headline, one image, lots of space.

Carousels

Up to 20 slides that people swipe through. Ideal for tips, tutorials and before-and-after stories. The first slide is a hook, each middle slide holds one idea, the last slide asks for an action. Learn the seamless panorama technique in how to make an Instagram carousel in Canva.

Stories

Vertical, quick and casual. Leave the top and bottom 250 pixels clear of important text because the app interface covers them. See how to design Instagram Stories in Canva.

Reels covers

The cover is what shows on your grid. A consistent cover style keeps your profile clean. Here’s how to make Reels covers in Canva.

Pins and thumbnails

Pinterest and YouTube reward bold, readable text and clear focal points. We have step-by-step guides for Pinterest pins and YouTube thumbnails.

A weekly workflow that takes two hours

  1. Plan (20 minutes): decide this week’s posts using your content pillars.
  2. Write (30 minutes): draft headlines and captions for all of them at once.
  3. Design (60 minutes): duplicate your templates and fill them in one sitting. Our batch creation guide shows how to do a whole month this way.
  4. Schedule (10 minutes): use Canva’s Content Planner or Meta Business Suite. See how to schedule with Canva.

Free or Pro?

You can run a professional feed on Canva Free. Pro adds time savers like Magic Resize, background removal, unlimited brand kits and scheduling. Whether it is worth it depends on how much you post. We break it down in Canva Free vs Pro for social media.

Exporting the right way

  • PNG for graphics with text (sharpest result).
  • JPG for photo-heavy posts (smaller file).
  • PDF for LinkedIn carousels.
  • MP4 for animated posts and Reels.
