AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini can draft a month of social media copy in minutes. Used badly, they produce bland, obviously robotic posts. Used well, they become a fast junior copywriter that knows your brand. This guide shows you how to get the good version.
What AI is good at (and not)
| Great for | Needs your input |
|---|---|
| First drafts of captions, hooks and scripts | Real stories, opinions and experiences |
| Generating many variations fast | Facts, prices, dates and claims |
| Repurposing one piece into many | Your brand’s personality and judgment |
| Structuring carousels and calendars | Knowing what your audience actually cares about |
Step 1: Teach it your brand voice
The biggest upgrade is giving the AI a brand brief before you ask for anything. Include who you are, who you serve, what you sell, how you sound and words you never use. Save it and paste it at the start of every chat, or store it in custom instructions or a project. Our brand voice prompt template walks you through it.
Step 2: Use a prompt formula
Strong prompts include five parts:
- Role: “You are a social media copywriter for a boutique fitness studio.”
- Task: “Write five Instagram captions for a new 6am class.”
- Context: audience, offer, details and goal.
- Format: length, structure, number of options, emojis or not.
- Constraints: words to avoid, tone, reading level.
Example: “You are a social media copywriter for a boutique fitness studio in Austin. Write five Instagram captions announcing our new 6am HIIT class starting March 3. Audience: busy professionals aged 28 to 45. Goal: book a free first class via the link in bio. Each caption: a hook under 10 words, two short paragraphs, one call to action. Friendly and motivating, no cliches like ‘crush it’, maximum two emojis.”
Step 3: Use AI for each content type
Captions
Provide the post topic, goal and call to action. See ChatGPT prompts for Instagram captions.
Hooks
Ask for 20 hooks in different styles, then pick and refine. See AI prompts for hooks.
Carousels
Ask for slide-by-slide copy with a word limit per slide. See carousel prompts.
Reels and TikTok scripts
Ask for a script with a hook, beats and on-screen text. See Reels script prompts.
Ads
Ask for variations by angle: pain point, benefit, social proof, offer. See AI ad copy prompts and UGC ad script prompts.

Step 4: Plan with AI
Give the AI your content pillars, offers and key dates and ask for a month of post ideas in a table. Then you choose and refine. See AI content calendar prompts.
Step 5: Repurpose everything
One blog post, video or podcast episode can become a carousel, three captions, a Reel script, a LinkedIn post and an email. See AI repurposing prompts.
Step 6: Edit so it sounds human
Never post AI copy without editing. Add a real detail, cut filler, remove cliches and read it out loud. Our checklist in how to make AI captions sound human shows exactly what to change.
Step 7: Use AI for community management
AI can draft replies to comments, DMs and reviews in your voice, which saves time while keeping you responsive. Always review before sending. See AI prompts for replying to comments and reviews.
Which AI assistant?
ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini can all do this work well, each with different strengths. We compare them in ChatGPT vs Claude for social media.
