Stories are where followers become customers. They are casual, quick and interactive, and they only work if people tap forward instead of swiping away. Here is how to design Stories in Canva that keep people watching.
Size and safe zones
Create a design at 1080 x 1920 pixels. Then mark the safe zones: Instagram’s profile bar covers roughly the top 250 pixels and the reply bar covers roughly the bottom 250 pixels. Keep important text and buttons inside the middle area. A quick trick is to add a temporary transparent rectangle at the top and bottom of your template as a guide.
Layouts that work
- Big statement: one sentence in large type on a solid color. Great for announcements.
- Photo plus caption: a full-bleed photo with a short line of text on a solid band.
- Sticker space: a layout with an empty area reserved for a poll, question or link sticker.
- List: three to five short bullet points, for example “3 things happening this week”.
- Countdown: event or launch announcements with space for the countdown sticker.
Design for interaction
The algorithm notices when people interact with your Stories, and interaction is also how you start conversations. Leave room in your design for:
- Poll and quiz stickers.
- Question boxes (“Ask me anything about…”).
- Link stickers to products or booking pages.
- Emoji sliders for quick reactions.

Keep a Story template library
Create five reusable Story templates in Canva: announcement, poll, testimonial, product spotlight and behind the scenes. Each week, duplicate and update them. This takes Stories from a daily chore to a ten-minute task.
Animation tips
Canva can animate text and elements, and you can download Stories as MP4. Keep animations subtle (a simple rise or fade) and short, around five to seven seconds per Story, so people do not lose patience.
A simple weekly Story routine
- Monday: what’s coming this week.
- Tuesday: poll or quiz.
- Wednesday: share your latest feed post.
- Thursday: behind the scenes.
- Friday: customer love or testimonial.
